Fiat said on March 6 that it was setting up a production line in Poland to turn out its new reduced-emission MultiAir engines. "We are in the process of setting up a branch for this project in Bielsko-Biala," Fiat Auto Poland spokesman Boguslaw Cieslar said, referring to the southern Polish city where the group already operates.
Cieslar declined to confirm a report in the Polish daily Rzeczpospolita that Fiat was investing an estimated 400 million euros (US$500 million) in the new facility, which would produce 500,000 engines a year.
Fiat and General Motors currently run a joint operation in Bielsko-Biala which produces Fiat GM Powertrain diesel engines.
Fiat, which has been present in Poland for 88 years, also produces Fiat 500, Fiat 600 and Panda brands in Tychy in southern Poland.
