On Dec. 22, 2005, the ports of Los Angeles and Shanghai signed the Friendship Port Agreement and the Letter of Intent for Collaboration on Air Quality Issues. The Friendship Agreement calls for environmental improvements in commercial waterfront development while the Letter of Intent is concerned with the technical aspects of urban air pollution management. These agreements are part of an overall mutual accord to study global air quality.
In a recent trip to Shanghai during which these agreement were officiated, the Port of Los Angeles discussed its Clean Air Program and ship-related emission reduction strategies. The Port of Shanghai also shared its views on emission testing and air monitoring. Each port program requires participation from the U.S. EPA, the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration and Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau.
