ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steel producer, said May 20 it will spend $2.2 billion to expand its mining complex in Quebec.
The investment will allow ArcelorMittal Mines Canada to increase its annual production of iron ore concentrate at its Mont-Wright mine to 24 million tons by 2013 from 14 million tons.
The company also is exploring an increase of iron-ore pellet production to 18.5 million tons from 9.2 million tons.
Once completed , the expansion is expected to create 900 permanent jobs.
The project is pending environmental and other regulatory approvals.
