German engineering giant Siemens (IW 1000/26) said Monday it had won a contract worth more than $123 million to provide a tram system in Doha ahead of the 2022 football World Cup.
"The order is worth more than 100 million euros, and the trams will start running from ... 2015," the German firm said in a statement.
Siemens will provide 19 trams, as well as the signal and communication technology and the rail system.
"The order is part of Qatar's preparations for the 2022 Soccer World Cup. By then, around $60 billion should have been invested in expanding the country's infrastructure," the statement added.
