While many companies proclaim the priority they place on creating safe work environments, the number that have integrated safety into the very fabric of their business operations is far less.
Sixteen companies -- in industries ranging from construction and facility maintenance to manufacturing and public infrastructure -- are among the subset that treats EHS as a building block necessary for global business success. These companies were named on Sept. 30 to the list of 2013 America's Safest Companies.
Companies named to the annual list "understand the symbiotic relationship between safety and productivity, profits, morale and employee retention," says Sandy Smith, editor in chief of EHS Today, which annually presents the awards.
The 16 firms are:

- American & Efird LLC
- Dresser-Rand
- Great Lakes Construction Co.
- Honda of South Carolina
- LP Building Products
- Morton Salt
- The Mundy Companies
- Northern Improvement Co.
- Odebrecht
- Raytheon
- Rogers Corp. Advanced Circuit Materials Division
- The Brock Group
- Safariland LLC
- Valdes Engineering
To be considered as one of America's Safest Companies, businesses must meet multiple criteria, including: demonstrate support from management and employee involvement, provide innovative solutions to safety challenges, report injury and illness rates significantly lower than the average for their industries and believe that the prevention of incidents is the cornerstone of the safety process.
"The marketplace is demanding that companies be sustainable, and they only should be considered sustainable if they protect their most important asset: employees," Smith says.
These companies will be honored at the 2nd Annual America's Safest Companies Conference October 28th-30th in Atlanta, GA.
