Highlights from the 2016 Detroit Auto Show

The auto industry just finished up a banner year, so you'd think the confetti would be flying as car makers rolled out their 2016 models, polished to a high diamond shine. Instead the mood was upbeat yet subdued--with highlights like these attracting extra attention.

The auto industry just finished up a banner year, so you'd think the confetti would be flying as car makers rolled out their 2016 models, polished to a high diamond shine. But instead the mood was upbeat yet subdued, maybe because the VW emissions scandal cast a long shadow, or because a bad week for the stock market hinted that the good times are winding down.

Or maybe because those who love the roar of the engine and the curve of the road can't work up much excitement for increased fuel efficiency and self-driving software.

Still, there were plenty of highlights. Here's a look, from the Chevy Bolt--the first mid-priced car that goes 200 miles on an electric charge--to the Mercedes E Class, which can drive itself on the highway for the longest stretch yet.
