The partnership between GM and LG called Ultium Cells has announced three electric battery plants in recent years:
- The Warren, Ohio, plant has already begun production, with plans to exceed 35 GWh annually.
- The second battery cell manufacturing plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, was announced in April 2021. With production planned to begin later this year, the partnership recently announced investing $275 million on top of the initial $2.3 billion investment.
- This past January, Ultium Cells announced a third plant in Lansing, Michigan. The $2.6 billion investment will create a 2.8 million square-foot facility and is scheduled to open next year.
Although there were talks of a fourth plant located in Indiana by the joint venture, no agreement has been made, and GM may proceed with a different partner. Kareem Maine, plant director for the Ohio facility, spoke about battery manufacturing and the EV landscape at IndustryWeek's 2022 Manufacturing and Technology Show.
