Ford Recalls F-150 Pickups to Fix Cruise Control Braking
WASHINGTON—Ford Motor Co. recalled on Wednesday some of its new F-150 pickup trucks to fix a cruise control braking problem that could cause a rear-end crash.
Ford said it had received a report of one accident that might be related to the problem but that no injuries were reported.
The second-largest US automaker recalled nearly 37,000 F-150s, model year 2015, that might be affected in North America, most of them in the United States.
The problem occurs when the F-150 passes a large, highly reflective truck, Ford said.
The F-150's adaptive cruise control radar can incorrectly identify the truck being passed as being in the F-150's lane of travel. That can trigger warnings and illuminate the brake lights.
"As a result, the vehicle might apply the brakes until the truck is no longer perceived to be in the lane of travel," Ford said, an action that "could increase the risk of a crash involving a vehicle behind the F-150."
Ford said dealers would update the cruise control software in the affected trucks at no cost to the customer.
