An enhanced strategic alliance

Taiwan's microchip maker ProMOS Technologies Inc said May 8 it had signed an agreement with Hynix Semiconductor Inc. for an enhanced strategic alliance, which will involve the South Korean firm taking a stake in ProMOS.

Hynix will team up with some investors to acquire 8-10% stake in ProMOS through a private placement, ProMOS.

Hynix, South Korea's second-largest chipmaker, will transfer 50-nanometer stack DRAM technology to ProMOS as part of the tie-up. ProMOS will, in turn, provide its 12-inch-wafer lines to Hynix for production of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips based on 50-nm technology. ProMOS' existing 90-nm and 70-nm technologies came from the Korean firm.
