As part of IndustryWeek's Excellence in Action tours, a group visited the Boeing Philadelphia site, which is home to over 6,000 employees who support the design, manufacture and marketing of state-of-the-art- military aircraft including the V-22 Osprey and the H-47 Chinook.
The site serves as headquarters of the Boeing Mobility division, which provides domestic and international military customers with aircraft capable of moving troops, machines, resources and supplies to the right place at the right time, quickly and efficiently for combat and humanitarian missions.
In addition to the Chinook and Osprey production lines, the site features a Boeing Composite Center of Excellence, which fabricates complex assemblies and rotor blades, as well as the nation's largest privately owned wind tunnel.
The Boeing Company's presence in the Philadelphia area dates back to the 1940s, and the company has continuously improved and updated its facilities through major factory upgrades such as the creation of a V-22 Lean Focused Factory in 2003, and the current $130 million initiative to transform the Chinook factory into a world-class lean assembly environment.
