While the list is based on revenues, many factors play a role in how well a company does on the IW U.S. 500 list.

For Armor Holdings Inc. (No. 314), suppliers of human safety and survival systems to all branches of the U.S. military, moving 77 places up the list isn't surprising with so many troops currently in Iraq.

As for Walter Industries Inc. (No. 459), slipping 130 places could be attributed to the company spinning off Mueller Water Products Inc. (No. 359) worth nearly $2 billion.

But for many IW U.S. 500 companies, stellar sustainability and financials go hand in hand. The 20 companies that appear in the chart below have grown revenues by at least 100% since 2002.

Roper Industries Inc. (No. 390), a standout with nearly 2,000% growth, manufactures specialized products in several industries including energy, radio frequency applications and research/medical applications.

They sure do make 'em big in Texas. While California has four more manufacturers on the IW U.S. 500 list, Texas makes nearly double the revenue. Not surprising since many petroleum and coal products companies call the Lone Star State home.

Minnesota, in the No. 10 position, is home to 3M Co. and Hormel Corp.
