In a decision that is sending shock waves through the business community, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled last month that a 25-year-old employee can have a trial to determine whether he was a victim of age discrimination under the state's Law Against Discrimination, which was intended to apply only to employees 40 and older but doesn't specifically say so. (The federal age discrimination law specifically limits protection to workers who are at least 40). The plaintiff is a bank vice president of credit card collection who claims he was let go five months after he was hired because of his youthful age. The case was returned to the Superior Court in Bergen County (N.J.) for a trial.
