The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has published The Green Guide to Cars and Trucks. The publication offers car buyers tips on buying an environmentally safe vehicle. Each vehicle listed in the publication is given a Green Score. The number is based on a vehicle's air pollution health costs, global warming pollution, and other specifications. The guide's tables are arranged by vehicle class and cover cars, station wagons, vans, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles.
The Green Guide lists the top 12 most environmentally efficient vehicles in 1998, the 12 worst vehicles for the environment, and information on the environmental impacts of motor vehicles, including global warming and the health effects of vehicle pollution. The ratings in theGreen Guide are based on emissions certificates and fuel economy data that automakers report to EPA.
"We've started the Green Guide in anticipation of a 'green revolution' in automotive technology," says Howard Geller, executive director of ACEEE. "By providing Green Scores for every model, we hope to influence consumer choice and encourage automakers to provide cleaner and more fuel-efficent vehicles."
