Michael E. Porter, a professor of business administration and author of more than 15 books and 60 articles, has just released On Competition, a collection of his essays on competitive strategy. Published by Harvard Business School Press, Boston, the book is organized around three primary categories: competition and strategy, the competitiveness of locations, and competitive solutions to societal problems. Addressing the connection between competition and the environment, Porter says: "In the new thinking, competitiveness arises from increasing productivity in the use of resources. Productivity improvements must be never-ending. . . . Corporations should see environmental improvement not as a regulatory matter but as an essential part of improving productivity and competitiveness."
