March 15, 2024
Also, can our electric grid handle chip manufacturing, and why are automation engineers ignoring you?

Boeing Co. has been on the receiving end of lots of bad news recently, and it’s reflected in this week’s IndustryWeek’s Weekly Reads. Not only have articles about the aerospace giant’s woes captured two spots in the Top 10 most-consumed articles in the past seven days, but the No. 1 spot is held down by a Boeing outsourcing story that is nearly five years old.

In addition to Boeing, the IW manufacturing community turned its eyes toward Rivian, cyber attacks and a shorter work week. Without further ado, the Top 10 are:

Boeing's 737 Max Software Outsourced to $9-an-Hour Engineers: Mark Rabin, a former software engineer, recalled one manager saying at an all-hands meeting that Boeing didn’t need senior engineers because its products were mature.

Rivian Halts EV Plant Development in Georgia: The startup electric truck and van company will make its newest models at its existing plant in Illinois by 2026, rather than at the still-under-construction site east of Atlanta.

A New Wave of Cyber Attacks: Five Actions to Take Now: Originating in China, Russia and Iran, these new threats are stealthier and more sophisticated.

Why Skilled Automation Engineers Aren't Applying for your Job Openings: Companies need to improve communications with job candidates, and that starts with knowing what they're looking for in skilled employees.

The Success of US Chip Manufacturing Hinges on Our Electric Grid: Advanced semiconductor equipment requires 10 times more power. Our grid is not up to the task.

Boeing Says Employees Must Take 'Immediate' Action on Safety Measures: Of the 89 production process audits conducted by the FAA, Boeing failed 33 of them, the New York Times reported Tuesday.

So That Happened: Executives Joining and Leaving 3M, GM: IndustryWeek editors look into those stories and ANCA turning 50, saying goodbye to Robert "Doc" Hall and who are the sweetest candy makers in the country.

The 32-Hour, 4-day Workweek: A Win-Win or a Risky Move? There’s been a lot of talk on the employer side about the idea, but very little action.

The Power of Being Over Doing in Leadership: The essence of impactful leadership lies not in the multitude of tasks we accomplish, but in how we show up each day to create the conditions for learning and continuous improvement.

The US Must Lead the Way in Advanced Manufacturing Talent: Tapping into workforce resources at the national level can advance the skills of the labor force locally.
